DEREK NICE: PAINTINGS & CONSTRUCTIONS
10 JUNE – 1 JULY 2017
OPEN TUE – SAT, 1OAM – 4PM
Derek Nice’s dreams of the sea inspire his work, and he is occupied in making paintings and constructing objects from materials dissolved and disassembled by it. His work alludes to and celebrates the transitions and processes brought by the sea – land erosion, structure of vessels, the stripping down of layers of paint to expose grain and texture.
The rich heritage of maritime history, from ancient graffiti on church and harbour walls to scratches on prison walls by galley slaves marking a tally of their sentences, can be found in his work. His inspiration is drawn from wall paintings and model ships by nautical forbears, invoking the spirit and essence of familiar craft of voyages long ago, and his time spent working and living abroad.
