Derek Nice’s dreams of the sea inspire his work, which celebrate the transitions and processes brought by the sea.
The rich heritage of maritime history, from ancient graffiti on church and harbour walls, to scratches on prison walls by galley slaves marking a tally of their stay can be found in the work. His inspiration is also drawn from wall paintings and model ships made by nautical forbears.
Derek Nice was born in London and displaced early on to Essex. After a promising start as a junior art student, he went on to do a post-graduate design degree at London’s Central School of Art before teaching at Brighton and Hornsey among others. A career as an art director and designer for stage and screen followed. His design skills were then extended into museums in the UK, Ireland and Norway.
He has been working as an artist for 25 years, moving between Malta and the Mendip Hills in Somerset focussing on boat-centered sculpture and paintings. He has shown widely at galleries in the UK including Messums Gallery London, Victoria Art Gallery Bath, Slader’s Yard Dorset.
After visiting Greece as a student, Derek fell for the history, colours and atmosphere of the Eastern Mediterranean. When working on design projects in Malta, he became obsessed with the raw splendour of a rocky outcrop weathering waves of invasion and rich culture.
