[tab:biography]
John Bolam was born in Amersham and initially studied both furniture design and painting at the Hornsey School of Art. A painter very much in the Neo-Romantic tradition he was influenced by Braque and other French Modernists. He was involved with the Great Bardfield Group of artists and counted Edward Bawden, Michael Rothenstein and John Aldridge among his friends and colleagues. Bolam himself had works exhibited at the Arts Council Gallery, the AIA, the Whitechapel Art Gallery and a solo show at the New Art Centre – London.
From 1970-1983 Bolam was head of the School of Art at Cambridge College of Art and Technology. His works are now in the collection of Rank Xerox, Barclays Bank, Touche Ross and The Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden.
