Biography

William James Laidlaw Baillie was born in Edinburgh. His studies at Edinburgh College of Art were interrupted by war service in the Far East. Eventually graduating from Moray House College he was appointed resident tutor at the National Gallery of Art Summer School in Ottawa.

In 1960 Baillie joined the staff of Edinburgh College of Art where he served for nearly three decades, retiring as Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Drawing and Painting School.

William Laidlaw Baillie’s work is held in the collections of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Scottish Arts Council and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. A retrospective was held at Kirkaldy Art Gallery in 1977.
