Stewart Geddes

Stewart Geddes is a painter and curator. He curated ‘Albert Irvin and Abstract Expressionism’ in conjunction with the Albert Irvin Estate and Tate Gallery at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), December 2018 – March 2019. He is Past President of the RWA, where he remains an Academician, as well as an Honorary Royal Scottish Academician. Most recently Geddes has completed a collaboration with Philip Selway of Radiohead, in which he made a number of paintings to go alongside Selway’s solo albums ‘Strange Dance’ and ‘Live at Evolution Studios’.

“My paintings are improvisations in which the point of departure is a proposed cluster of colours. I have two stock tactics for activating the rectangle – a meandering linear gesture, and an amorphous puddle of paint – once this first draft is complete, a period of reflection takes place where I consider my next move. And so it goes, until resolution is found.

Although I think of my paintings as autonomous, I’m aware they are spatial and draw in other references. I think of them as like landscapes with the scale of a room.”
