Sophie Glover
Sophie Glover (b.1992) lives and works in South-East London making oil paintings, drawings & jewellery. Her still life paintings are little tableaus of her thoughts; made using dark, muted, autumnal or milky palettes, shot through with visceral reds - her paintings repetitively layer and return to certain themes and imagery. She uses symbolic objects, resting in domestic settings, to explore themes of rest, personal rituals and the occult. Hands rest on tables of ephemera where postcards tell secret stories, luminous phones are portals to our digital life, anaemic fruit or flowers often suggest an element of decay and women sleep heavy as rocks.
Her paintings have been sold into various private collections as well as being frequently commissioned. Sophie was awarded Arts Council England's Grants for the Arts and has been long-listed for the BP Portrait Award & Jackson’s Art Prize. She has undertaken several residencies as well as participating in multiple solo and group exhibitions including Chiaroscuro, Milieu Studios, St Ives 2024, Emblems, Partnership Editions, London 2024, Inside/Outside, Soho Revue, London 2024, Baggage Claim, Staffordshire Street, London 2023, DOA Show, London 2021, LSI WIP Show, Camden Arts Centre, London 2019, Jardin d’Hiver, Regionmuseet Kristianstad, Sweden 2016, Drawing Biennial, Drawing Room, Bermondsey 2015.
